Spirit Airlines Grounds All Flights: What You Need to Know

The travel landscape shifted significantly this morning as Spirit Airlines officially began an orderly wind-down of all operations. Effective immediately, all Spirit flights have been canceled. If you have a flight scheduled, the most important piece of advice is simple: do not go to the airport. Spirit customer service is no longer available on-site or via phone.
This closure follows a challenging period for the carrier, as a final federal assistance package failed to materialize amidst rising operational costs. For those with upcoming travel plans or those currently away from home, here is how to navigate the refund and rebooking process.
The Refund Process
Spirit has stated it will automatically process refunds for flights purchased directly through the airline using a credit or debit card. These will be returned to the original form of payment. However, the timeline for these "automatic" refunds can be unpredictable during a liquidation.
If you booked through a third-party travel site or a travel agent, you must contact them directly to initiate your refund.
Insider Tips for Impacted Travelers
Initiate a Credit Card Chargeback: While Spirit is promising automatic refunds, travel experts recommend calling your credit card issuer immediately to dispute the charge for "services not received." This provides an extra layer of protection under the Fair Credit Billing Act, especially if the airline's internal refund process faces delays in bankruptcy court.
Leverage "Rescue Fares": Several major carriers, including United, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest, have announced they will offer capped fares or "rescue fares" for stranded Spirit passengers. In many cases, these special rates are only available for a limited window (often 72 hours to 5 days).
Keep Your Documentation: To qualify for rescue fares on other airlines, you will likely need to provide your Spirit confirmation number and proof of payment. Have digital or printed copies of your itinerary ready before you call other carriers.
Check Travel Insurance: If you have an independent travel insurance policy, contact your provider now. While many policies do not cover airline financial insolvency, some premium plans or those with "Cancel For Any Reason" (CFAR) coverage may provide relief for rebooking costs or incidental expenses.
Points and Vouchers: Unfortunately, Free Spirit points and future flight vouchers are considered unsecured debt. These will be handled through the bankruptcy court's liquidation process, meaning recovery of their value is not guaranteed and could take significant time.
