New for 2026: What to Expect
Southwest has undergone some major changes recently, so your flight experience will look a bit different than in years past:
Assigned Seating: The days of the boarding position scramble are over. You now choose your seat in advance when you book.
Baggage Fees: While one personal item and one carry-on bag are still free, Southwest now charges for checked luggage on most fare types.
First Checked Bag: $35
Second Checked Bag: $45
Premium Perks: If you book a Business Select or Choice Extra fare, you still get two free checked bags. Rapid Rewards A-List members and Southwest credit cardholders also receive baggage benefits, so check your status before you pay!
Pro Tip: If you’re traveling with a group or family, consider having at least one person book a "Choice Extra" fare or use a Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card. The savings on baggage fees for the group can often offset the higher fare cost.
Don’t wait until the clock runs out on March 12! Head over to Southwest.com to lock in your spring vacation.
