The Strip’s Best-Kept Secret: Stepping Into Nothingness at James Turrell’s Akhob

This is the most relaxing experience on the Las Vegas Strip.
This is the most relaxing experience on the Las Vegas Strip.

If you think Las Vegas is all neon lights and clanging slot machines, you haven’t been to the fourth floor of the Louis Vuitton Maison at The Shops at Crystals. Hidden behind the racks of designer handbags is Akhob, a massive, immersive light installation by world-renowned artist James Turrell that will make you question your own senses.

At LAS Discounts, we’re all about finding the high-end experiences that don't cost a dime. Akhob is completely free to visit, but it is one of the most exclusive tickets in town.

What is Akhob?

Named after the ancient Egyptian word for "pure water," Akhob is what Turrell calls a "Ganzfeld" (German for "whole field"). It consists of two circular chambers flooded with shifting, vibrant LED lights.

Because the rooms have no corners and the light is so uniform, your eyes lose their ability to perceive depth. It feels like you are standing inside a cloud of pure color or stepping into a void where the walls have simply vanished. It’s a 20-minute experience that is widely considered the most peaceful (and trippy) spot on the Strip.

How to Get In (The "Secret" Process)

You can’t just walk into Akhob. Because the installation only allows four people at a time to maintain the silence and immersion, you must have a reservation.

  • The Phone Call: You generally have to call the Louis Vuitton store directly at (702) 730-3150.

  • Book Early: Reservations often fill up 4 to 8 weeks in advance. If you’re planning a Vegas trip, this should be the first thing you book—even before your flight!

  • The Email Hack: If you can't get through on the phone, some visitors have had luck emailing akhob_city_center_las_vegas.us@louisvuitton.com to request a slot.

Insider Tips for Your Visit

  • Dress Code (For Your Feet): You will be asked to remove your shoes and wear white protective booties to keep the floor pristine. Wear clean socks!

  • The "No-Photo" Rule: Louis Vuitton is extremely strict about photography inside the installation. Put your phone away and actually enjoy the sensory deprivation. It’s a rare moment of "unplugged" Vegas.

  • Arrive Early: If you are late, they will give your spot away to someone on the waitlist. Arrive 15 minutes early so a store associate can escort you to the secret elevator.

  • Bonus Turrell Art: While you're at The Shops at Crystals, head over to the ARIA Express tram station. Turrell designed the lighting there as well (Shards of Color), which is another great free photo op.
